"... unicorns ... ravenous killers from beyond spacetime..."

Equoid: A Laundry novella: A Tor.Com Original - Charles Stross

How was I supposed to resist that ?!

The "Laundry" is Britain's super-secret agency devoted to protecting the realm from the supernatural horrors that menace it. Now Bob Howard, Laundry agent, must travel to the quiet English countryside to deal with an outbreak of one of the worst horrors imaginable. For, as it turns out, unicorns are real. They're also ravenous killers from beyond spacetime...

And I was trying to stay on the wagon, book buying-wise. I failed oh-so-hard here. And it's a series, so it looks like Mr. Stross will be getting more $ after I finish The Atrocity Archives. I burned right through this novella and was looking for more in about an hour. Fantastic imaginative blend of genres, and excellent, tight storytelling.

The Lovecraftian Horror/secret spy organization combo hooked me good, and the prose is crisp and dryly humorous. Bob kicks a bunch of ass also, once he gets out of his cubicle farm. He's my new geeky hero, with his calm and quiet sarcasm in the face of both otherworldly and bureaucratic Horrors.

Tor has it online at the link below, if you want to sample the crack.
